Now that we’ve talked about the importance of internal links in the previous article, we’ll show you how to adopt the right strategy to enhance the SEO of your pages and get solid results on Google.

Define Your Website Structure

If we consider that websites are files inside folders on a server, these files themselves are an information structure. Therefore, we can think of a website as a kind of pyramid.

At the top is the home page, below are the fixed pages, below are the categories, below are the contents and below are the attachments to these contents.

Think about how to define your site’s structure to help your visitors understand your site’s navigation. For example, many like to make the site’s categories their main menu, something that only works if the number of categories is small, of course.

Others like to structure the menu with “about”, “services” and “contact”, but leaving a widget showing the categories.

The truth is that there is no “perfect site structure”, but there are recommendations to follow such as:

  • The menu must be clear and indicate the priority pages to the visitor.
  • Categories must be navigable by providing a link to them in all published content.
  • It is recommended (and therefore not mandatory) that each category has a similar number of articles, so as not to polarize the site into just one type of content.
  • The fewer menu items, the less confusing the navigation will be for your visitor.

Analyze the Most Important Content

There is a type of content called “cornerstone content”, the literal translation would be “pillar content”. We prefer the term “fundamental content” (very fundamental, in the sense of “holding” the other contents).

In general, this content is the best and most complete on your website, being the core of your business. It is the content where you want to be found most on Google, and it can even serve as your brand’s manifesto.

If your website already has content like this, remember to add lots of internal links to it, this reinforces the structure of the pages and favors your SEO strategy.

Insert Contextual Links

A strategy we use in every publication and review of articles here at Melhores Hospedagem is: adding internal links to the publication.

We take the WordPress content list and, with the content of the current article still fresh in our minds, we see which ones relate to terms covered in the most recent material

As soon as we find it, we copy the link and continue looking for new content that can be inserted.

Yes, this takes a lot of time and only works if the content was recently written, but it’s an investment we make in our SEO strategy and we’ve seen positive results for it.

Tip: Something that can help you is to see posts in the same category. For example, this post is in the “SEO” category. So this means I can check all the other posts in that same category and link them to this one.

Add a Related Post Section

There are several themes that already come natively with the related post option. It further helps Google understand which posts link. After all, this theme option also generates links to corresponding pages in the same category. Therefore, it is interesting to activate it if you can.
